Voodoo Fix for Galaxy S

You could argue the Galaxy S is still the best hardware that Android is running on, in the UK at least.  It is quite widely commented though, that Samsung managed to balls something up pretty bad with their file system, causing all kinds of lag issues.  Many hackers are trying different things to fix this issue and I realise this is perhaps the third time I’ve written up a guide on how to fix the afore mentioned lag, but we could be on to a winner here.

By replacing the faulty RFS filesystem with the Linux-standard Ext4 filesystem, Voodoo lagfix simply restores I/O performance and global user experience of the Galaxy S to what it should have been to begin with.
And the performance level is awsome !

What’s best is it’s very simple to install!

Before we move on to the Voodoo Lagfix,  I should remind you, you must be on 2.1 for this to work.  I myself am using JM7, but there is now a JM8 available from here.  Once you have JM8, I can recommend Tayutama’s ROM, which is compatible with the Voodoo lag fix and can be applied through the recovery console.

If you don’t want to mess with a new ROM, that’s fine, provided you can get into recovery (hold Vol Up + Home while turning on) follow this quick guide -

  1. Go to Project Voodoo Downloads and down load the update.zap.
  2. Connect your Galaxy S and copy the update.zip to the base of your SD card.
  3. Boot into recovery and select update from update.zip on SD
  4. Reboot!

It’s as simple as that!  if you can’t get into recovery, download the ‘Odin PDA package’ and flash using Odin, place the kernel in the PDA part and flash without repartition selected.  Full instructions can be found here.

The first boot will take a bit longer, but I can assure you, it’s worth the wait.  I’ve delayed this post a couple of days, to see the performance remains constant.  The other fixes I’ve posted have tended to gradually slow down, but this Voodoo fix seems to be flying as fast today as it was when I first installed 3 days ago!

If you wanted to go that one step further, there’s an Overclocked/Undervolted version available on XDA Developers here.  Myself, I’m amazed how fast my SGS is right now, with great battery life so I don’t want to change anything!  If you’re starting fresh though, it might be worth trying.

At the time of writing this, the Voodoo fix is on Beta 3, which apparently has a bug that can hold the CPU at 100%.  Myself, I see no problems, my battery life is better than it’s even been on the SGS, but there is a Beta 4 in the works which will fix this issue.

Let us know how you get on in the comments.

The 5.1 does not work on u.s. phones ………..it reverses the sound output and screws up the accelerometer

  • qzduster

That was fun.It goes like a rocket. 1675 in benchmark and no sign of lagging

Ooops, you made me realise I put the wrong key combo for recovery in the article. Corrected now. Many thanks.

Since the 3 button combo seems to work a bit different on different galaxy S versions here is how to getting into recovery mode on mine:

    1. Press and hold Volume Up + Home button
    2. Continue holding those buttons and then press and hold power button
    3. When you see the logo release power button ONLY
    4. Keep holding Volume Up + Home button until you enter recovery mode

    Haven’t tried yet but
tried Quadrant with SGS with Android 2.1 and got 885.
    Is it ok?

FroYo builds that I tried still had lag. The Voodoo fix will hopefully be ported to FroYo once it’s gone official.

Any experience on (beta/custom) 2.2? Still needed?

Installed Beta4 and the performance is fantastic. Quadrant benchmark gives a score of 1608 compared to 800 prior to voodoo fix. The best part is the startup of the telephone feels 5 times faster and that normally extreamly irritating “media update” that runs at each startup and makes the phone lag to the point of completely freezing, is now completely gone. No lagging at all during “media update”.

    Hey Andy!
Beta4 is published now, and feedback is quite good :)

    Thanks for the article.
