Samsung Announces The Galaxy Tab 8.9 And The Redesigned Galaxy Tab 10.1 At CTIA

Remember the Galaxy Tab 10.1 that was shown off during MWC, well the company’s executives were impressed by Apple’s slimmer iPad 2, and not wanting to be outdone by Apple they decided to redesign the tablet and make it much slimmer.

They’ve also announced the new Galaxy Tab 8.9 that they have been teasing for a while now.

Both tablets look very impressive but if you want to know more I suggest you head on over past the break.

As you can see from the above pictures, Samsung has slimmed down the Galaxy Tab 10.1 a fair bit compared to what we saw at MWC. The  Tab 10.1 and the 8.9 look very similar, they both measure in at 0.33 inches thick compared to the iPad 2 that is 0.34 inches thick. So for all those people that thought no one can go slimmer than the iPad 2, you have been proven wrong.

Both Tabs will be running on 1GHz dual-core processors, whether that will a Tegra 2 or Samsung’s own variety was not mentioned, but since Samsung’s earlier design of the Galaxy Tab 10.1 featured a dual-core Tegra 2 processor, it would be safe to assume that it’s the same case here.

Both devices share a lot of the same hardware, they both have a 5mp rear camera with an LED flash and a 2mp front facing camera. Both tablets will also be available in 16GB and 32GB versions and Samsung has said that they will initially release Wi-Fi only versions and ones with optional data connectivity at a later date.

The difference between both tablets is obviously the size of the screen, but they will also have a difference in battery capacity. The Galaxy Tab 8.9 will feature a 6000mah battery while the Galaxy Tab 10.1 will feature a 6860mAH battery. Even though the capacity of both batteries are different, Samsung is saying that both devices will be able to play video for 10 hours on one charge.

Another intersting tad-bit that you will probably want to know is that Samsung has decided to put their own TouchWiz UX atop of Honeycomb, why would you do that Samsung. Honeycomb is a well polished operating system, that runs pretty smooth but with the TouchWiz UX I noticed there was some lag on the tablets. Let’s hope this is only because they are running early software builds otherwise, if I do get one, I might have to root it and put a vanilla version of Honeycomb on it.

Overall both tablets do look great, the screens look vibrant and less washed out than the Motorola Xoom and they’re both extremely slim. The redesign is much better than their original device shown at MWC, so thumbs up to Samsung for that.

Let us know your thoughts on the new Galaxy Tabs.

The Galaxy Tab 8.9 seems more portable, so that’s something I might consider. 0.1 inches lol, yeh at least they can still say it’s slimmer.

POW! 0.1 inches thinner.. take THAT apple!… It’s kind of petty of Samsung, but I kind of like it :o P

Touch wiz is a bit of a disappointment, but only to be expected really. I suspect Motorola would have put their MotoBlur UX on top of honeycomb on the xoom if they didn’t have some kind of arrangement with google.

These look really nice, I can’t wait to see them in real life to suss out what size I like best.
